Better Living Through Fish Oils

 
Omega-3 fatty acids have been getting quite a lot of press in the last few years. So much so that we see foods being supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids, such as omega-3 eggs, omega-3 crackers, omega-3 yogourt and many other prepared foods.

One of the best forms of omega-3 fatty acids are fish, particularly the oil from cold water fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, cod and others. Fish oils generally come in a capsule, such as Newtopia`s Omega Support, or in a flavored liquid (yes, a flavored liquid that believe it or not, tastes quite good!). When you pick up a bottle of fish oils, you'll see that it contains two main ingredients: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA is usually regarded as having an effect on the cardiovascular system, while DHA is usually regarded as having an effect on the brain. You should always take a fish oil that contains both EPA and DHA because they are synergistically beneficial.

Fish oils are probably one of the best dietary supplements for disease prevention and for treating health problems. Human studies have shown that fish oils:

May prevent heart disease (heart attack and stroke) and heart disease-related death.

Lower blood triglycerides (fat) and cholesterol.

May prevent osteoporosis.

Treat diseases such as asthma, arteriosclerosis, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disease, wasting (cachexia), depression, dry eye syndrome, diabetic nerve problems (neuropathy), menstrual cramps, high blood pressure, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and many others.

In obesity research, one study demonstrated that fish oil intake improves weight loss and decreases blood glucose and insulin concentrations in overweight and hypertensive patients. In another study, people taking fish oils had significant body fat reduction when combined with exercise.

A good question to ask is: why not eat fish instead of taking a fish oil? There is no reason why you cannot do both, but here are a few reasons why taking fish oil as a supplement may be better for you: 1) to reach therapeutic levels of EPA and DHA you would have to eat a lot of fish daily, 2) only the cold water fish are high in EPA and DHA, e.g. sole has far less fish oil per serving versus herring, 3) certain fish (shark, tile fish, king fish, sword fish and some types of tuna) contain high levels of mercury, which may cause health problems when eaten regularly, and 4) fresh fish is not always readably accessible in the area that you live in.

As I finish this article, I am minutes away from taking my daily dose of fish oils! A tip for you: take your fish oils and then eat some food afterwards - this will prevent getting the rather awkward fish repeats (burps).

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil represent an exciting area of mental health research. One of the components of fish oil, EPA, is emerging as a potential treatment for a number of mood disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. While much of this research is in the early stages, there may be a link between taking fish oil and a general improved sense of well-being.

Stay tuned for more conclusive, larger scale studies in the future investigating the benefits of fish oil for better mental health!

Studies have shown that North Americans consume an average 130-150 mg per day total of EPA + DHA. Based on current best evidence, an average of 650 - 900 mg per day total of EPA + DHA is optimal for health in adults. It offers many established benefits as well many potential benefits that are currently being researched. The recommendation is based on consensus from expert panels, research reviews and meta-analyses including the National Institute of Health, the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association. To get 650 - 900 mg of EPA + DHA total from food alone, consume 5 to 7 servings of fatty fish per week. In a 2001 study on coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death in North America, fish oil consumption showed a 20-25% reduction in all cause mortality. Exercise showed a 24% reduction, while Statins which are a class of drug used to actually decrease your cholesterol, only reduced all cause mortality by 12%.

Just another reason to exercise, eat right and take your fish oil!
